The Fourth of July is most famously known as the day where the United States declared its independence from Britain, but did you know that Maryland’s involvement in the revolutionary war was extremely important in gaining it? Baltimore is also the birthplace of our anthem, The Star Spangled Banner. The song was written after a British onslaught known as the Battle of Baltimore where our flag flew victorious after what looked like a complete loss.
If you’re looking to celebrate our independence day, then we at Spinnaker Bay have a list of places and events for you to check out.
If you head over to Federal Hill, there will be two events you can check out. One event is the BMI’s Independence Day Celebration, where you can enjoy a waterfront view of the glorious fireworks show. The other event is the AVAM’s 4th of July Pet Parade & Talent Show! At this event, you are allowed to bring your pet, fluffy, scally, or feathery, and march through AVAM’s campus, followed by a chance to reveal your pet’s special talents. This exciting event starts at 9am, so you can still catch the fireworks show at night.
Over at nearby Fort McHenry in Locust Point is the perfect chance to learn more about the origins of our anthem and independence day. Starting at 10 am, you can enjoy several festivities, including learning about how the holiday was celebrated in the early republic, all while also enjoying live music.
Over at the Inner Harbor is the chance to see another showcase of 4th of July fireworks. Grab some food from the Red, White, and Blue picnic and listen to live music from 4 to 6pm, as well as other attractions to enjoy. Be sure to stick around for the whole event, because it all ends with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra playing along with the fireworks display! This is the highlight of summer, so if you can, be sure to check it out.
Lastly, we have the Cherry Hill Arts and Music Waterfront Festival. This event has performances from local, regional, and national artists, as well as a selection of different activities for kids and adults alike! Celebrate Cherry Hill’s historical and cultural significance on Independence Day, all ending with a fantastic fireworks display over the water.
We hope that you have a lovely holiday! Be sure to stay safe this weekend and savor your independence.

Happy Memorial Day, Spinnaker residents! This long weekend is the unofficial kick-off to summer. However, Memorial Day represents more than an extra day off work. We’d also like to take the opportunity to honor those who sacrificed their lives in service and extend our gratitude to their families.
Destinations to Discover
Want to get away this Memorial Day Weekend? We’ve selected some of our favorite destinations within driving distance that are perfect for a long weekend trip.
Beaches
Cape Charles Beach – 4 hours from Baltimore
Nestled along Virginia's eastern shore, Cape Charles beach is a fantastic option for MDW. This serene public beach has very few waves, making it ideal for a peaceful swim. Between beach visits, you can stroll through the town's picturesque neighborhoods and historic architecture.
Maryland’s Coast – 2.5 hours from Baltimore
Want to stay in our home state? No problem. There is plenty to see and do along the coast of Maryland, including nightlife in Ocean City. Or, visit Assateague Island for a once-in-a-lifetime view of wild horses. Or, get a dose of small-town living by visiting one (or a few!) of the cute coastal towns like Berlin, Snow Hill, or Pocomoke.
Rehoboth Beach – 2.5 hours from Baltimore
Delaware’s Rehoboth Beach is another great getaway. There, you can get the best of both worlds with a rejuvenating beach day and a fun night out on the vibrant boardwalk. Plus, you can take advantage of Delaware’s tax-free shopping!
Small Towns
Berkeley Springs – 1.5 hours from Baltimore
Berkeley Springs, West Virginia has it all – historic charm, luxurious spas, scenic state parks, and more. It's a great destination for large groups, because there's truly something for everyone.
Lancaster – 1.5 hours from Baltimore
Slow down and reconnect with a slower pace of life this Memorial Day Weekend. Visit Amish Country in Lancaster, PA to experience authentic Amish traditions and cuisine. Try a buggy ride, tour a farmhouse, and take the opportunity to appreciate the gorgeous Pennsylvanian landscape. Then, come back to modern times and explore one of the breweries or eateries in downtown Lancaster.
Adventurous Locales
Deep Creek – 1 hour from Baltimore
If you love outdoor adventures, visit Deep Creek. This region is home to over 40 hiking and biking trails, so you'll never run out of room to roam. Enjoy gorgeous lake views, mountain vistas, and plenty more.
Harpers Ferry – 1 hour from Baltimore
If you haven't been to Harpers Ferry yet, MDW is a great time to visit. History lovers can explore the dozens of historic sites, while outdoorsy types can get their steps in along 20 miles of hiking trails. There’s also great opportunities for biking, climbing, and picnicking in the park.

Earth Day is celebrated on April 22nd to raise awareness about environmental issues and promote sustainability. The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970, and it is widely credited with helping to launch the modern environmental movement. The event has since become a global phenomenon, with millions of people around the world participating in activities that promote environmental awareness and protection.
Here’s how you can celebrate Earth Day in Baltimore:
Attend an Earth Day Clean-up Event
Check out these Baltimore Earth Day events, where you can help make Baltimore beautiful:
On Saturday, April 22, from 9 a.m. until noon, head over to Patterson Park for an Earth Day Extravaganza. You can help care for young trees, plant new trees, pick up trash, edge walkways, garden and so much more. Best of all, there’s free coffee!
O'Donnell Square will also be hosting an Earth Day Community Clean-Up & Seed Swap on Saturday, April 22, at 10am. You can bring seeds, plants, and equipment to help spruce up the park's gardens. If you don't have a green thumb, you can still help pick up around the park.
If you’re looking to get a workout in and help the earth, try the Hands On HIIT Earth Day Clean-Up at Canton Waterfront Park on Sunday, April 23rd at 11am. Plan to bring a yoga mat for the workout, but clean-up gear will be provided.
Go Plastic-Free
To celebrate Earth Day, you can pledge to go plastic-free for the day, the week, or vow to adopt a plastic-free lifestyle. Bring a reusable water bottle and shopping bags, and try to avoid single-use plastic products like straws and utensils.
Attend a Farmer’s Market
Supporting local farmers and purchasing locally-sourced food is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint and support sustainable agriculture. Visit one of Baltimore’s many farmer’s markets to celebrate Earth Day while also enjoying fresh, healthy produce.
Take Public Transportation
Taking public transportation, biking, or walking instead of driving is an effective way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and celebrate Earth Day. In Baltimore, be sure to check out the Charm City Circulator, a free, eco-friendly transportation option that can take you around the city without contributing to air pollution.
Happy Earth Day
Earth Day is an important day that reminds us of the importance of environmental protection and sustainability. By taking action and making small changes, we can all contribute to a healthier, more sustainable Baltimore and planet.
